YouTube’s Upload Limit has been Increased to 15 minutes

YouTube, a popular video-sharing website, has just increased its upload limit to 15 minutes for all users. Prior to this increase, YouTube’s upload limit was only 10 minutes.

With this, YouTube users around the world are asked to upload a 15-minute video and tag it with “yt15minutes”. The video should be uploaded on August 4, 2010 (Wednesday). Some of those videos will be featured on the homepage giving them their own 15 minutes of fame.

I guess you’re wondering why is the upload limit increased only now. This is because they’ve spent a lot of time with the creation of the Content ID.

This Content ID will actually address the copyright infringement issues that have been plaguing YouTube. The Content ID is comprised of the Audio ID and the Video ID. This will let the content owners identify the uploaded videos that are comprised entirely or partially of their content. Then, the content owners will have the option to either make money from them, get statistics on those videos or have them blocked on YouTube.

Facebook: Now with more than 500 million registered users

Facebook has reached more than 500 million registered users already. In the Philippines, more people are searching now for Facebook than that of Friendster and Multiply. You’ll notice that in late 2008, the number of searches of Friendster decreased tremendously while the number of searches in Facebook spiked and then increased gradually. Multiply is way behind both Facebook and Friendster.

Plurk was Ripped Off by Microsoft China

Remember the news about a social networking site in China that’s a Facebook ripoff (previously known as xiaonei.com, now renren.com)? Well, I am not expecting Microsoft China to rip-off Plurk, but they just did. Plurk is amongst the popular microblogging services used by Filipinos.

Microsoft China’s microblogging service is dubbed as Microsoft China MSN Club. You can check out the actual website here.

By checking one of the featured profiles on the front page, you will notice that it has used Plurk’s exact UI design. Plurk’s dev team also noted that it has used 80 percent of its codebase.

It sounds ironic that the software giant, Microsoft, has done something like this to think that they are against piracy.

Formspring.me

The website, Formspring.me is becoming popular here in the Philippines. In Formspring, you can either create a new account or login using your Facebook credentials. This is where people can ask you questions (anonymously or not) and you can share your answers to the questions directly in Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter and Blogger.

They also have a widget that you can embed on your blog or website.

This is like Social Interview, a Facebook app wherein you will get to answer random silly questions about yourself and your friends. The difference is that, Formspring.me adds a personal touch to it because the questions come from the people you know online and IRL (in real life).

To me, Formspring.me is the new “slum book”.

MySpace has shut down imeem

After MySpace bought imeem, they shut it down. imeem is one of the popular websites that a lot of Filipinos use. If you try going to imeem.com, you will be redirected to http://www.myspace.com/imeem.

You still have to wait for MySpace to push an update. Even though the apps are available, it won’t function since it’s disabled temporarily.

What will happen to your playlists in imeem

To be able to restore access to your imeem playlists that you created, you need to create a MySpace account using the same email address you used for imeem. You’ll just have to wait for your data to be integrated with MySpace Music.

Third party services using imeem’s API

The imeem developer community has also been greatly affected with the pullout of the API. So, if you are using a website that makes use of imeem’s API, most likely, you’ll have to jump on to MySpace if you wish to have access to imeem playlists.

Friendster’s New Look

Friendster has a new look which is a bit fresher than before. They seem to promote Yahoo! Mail by letting the soon-to-be users of the said social networking website with a link to create a Yahoo! account if in case they don’t have an email yet.

Now, you can see more activity stream of your friends in Friendster. The look-and-feel of the posting a shoutout form is much better. They could have used a different color on the sidebar of the user’s home page though.

But the re-branding of Friendster is a bit late. They could have done this ages ago before some users stopped using it.

Multiply IM is powered by Meebo

The newest feature of one of the widely used social networking sites of Filipinos is an IM (instant messaging) where one could chat with his/her friends online. The IM/chat functionality is powered by Meebo. The interesting feature about Multiply using Meebo is that you can also chat with your friends who are using other social networks and websites.

To date, Meebo can connect you to:

- Yahoo! Messenger
- MSN Messenger
- MySpace
- AIM
- Facebook
- gTalk
- ICQ
- Jabber
- MyYearbook

For chatting with Multiply friends, you need to login to Multiply.

Interface of the Multiply IM is similar to that of Facebook. I guess some would prefer Multiply’s IM since it can be connected to other social networking sites.
