WordPress: to end support for PHP 4 and MySQL 4

WordPress, one of the top blogging platforms used by Filipino bloggers would stop supporting PHP 4 and MySQL 4 after version 3.1. WordPress 3.1 will be released late 2010. This is a signal for developers to be prepared on updating their plugins. In addition, if you are hosted somewhere that does not support PHP 5 and MySQL 5, better ask your hosting provider if they will switch soon.

WordPress 3.2 will be available in the first half of 2011. The minimum requirements for version 3.2 of WordPress are:

PHP 5.2
MySQL 5.0.15

If your hosting does not meet the minimum requirements, it won’t be updated to WordPress 3.2.

How do I know if my hosting meets the minimum requirements?

One of the most popular blogging platform used in the Philippines is Blogger.com. This is great for bloggers who are using the said platform so that they would not have the need to login to their respective Google Analytics account to see how many pageviews they have.

What Stats Will I See?

The Stats section is divided into 4 sections:

1. Overview

You’ll see there a graph of pageviews of a specific blog. I’m quite impressed because the stats displayed are almost real-time. Aside from the graph, you will see there a summary of the other 4 sections.

2. Posts

This is where you’ll learn which of your blog posts are popular.

3. Traffic Sources

In this section, you will see the referring sites, referring URLs and the search keywords used by the visitors of your blog.

4. Audience

In this section, you will see where your visitors come from (which country), what operating systems they are using and what browsers they are using.

As for me, I’d still prefer looking at my blog’s stats in Google Analytics because of the kind of data I can analyze from it.

Philippine National Elections is one of the most crucial but anticipated events because this is the time that we, as Filipinos, can exercise our right to vote and have hope for the future of the Filipinos. We as bloggers, will not be contented to contribute our help and existence online but also offline in the offline world as well.

More than a month ago with the initiative of Google Philippines, through its country representative Aileen Apolo – De Jesus, had Google Mapping Parties happening simultaneously in different parts of the Philippines such as Metro Manila, Davao, Cebu and others. Bloggers volunteered to map election precincts around the Philippines by going to the website www.findyourprecinct.ph.

Jonas Roque, owner of Facebuko is really creative to be able to get this domain name and modifying an existing theme to give the audience the user experience that is somewhat similar to the world’s popular social networking site, Facebook. You gotta love this humor blog.

I wonder what Facebuko thinks of Pinoy Friendster Day? I think that be an interesting discussion in Facebuko.

Blogger.com is turning 10 this coming August 10. Blogger is actually the first blogging platform that I’ve used (in 2001). I used it for a couple of years before switching to WordPress. So, if you are currently using Blogger.com, Google wants to hear your say on “What has your blog meant to you?”. You can answer the question by posting first to your blog on Blogger.com and fill out a form here to send the link to your blog post. You will also be asked if it’s okay to share your story with the press.

Where do most Filipinos Blog?

Abe posted an interesting analysis on Why Blogger isn’t that Popular in the Philippines. In fact, I would not really wonder why it’s not that popular. With Friendster dominating the social networking space in the Philippines and with it having a blogging feature (which is powered by TypePad), I won’t have that much of a doubt if Friendster would be the most widely used website by Filipinos for blogging. In fact, there are about 182,000 search results in Google using the search term “blogs.friendster.com“. Please do take note that I applied a filter here to show only results that are in Filipino language. Thus, the results for those who are written in English but owned by a Filipino is not included.

How about Blogging Platforms here in the Philippines?

There are actually a lot of blogs written in Filipino using Blogger.com. According to Google Results, there are around 1.4 million blogs that are in Filipino that are blogspot.com hosted blogs. And most of it are spam blogs.

Well, according to Google Trends for Websites, (excluding social networking websites), WordPress.com is more popular here in the Philippines, with LiveJournal.com on the far second, TypePad.com coming third, i.ph coming fourth and Blogger.com does not have any data to show which I find really weird since they own the site.

Why is Blogger.com not that popular?
It could be because of its interface design. It could also be because of the lack of some features or because it was behind with other blogging platforms in terms of features.
